EZ Erase FAQs

Print Friendly and PDF

What is EZ Erase™?

EZ Erase™ is a 3 mil metalized dry erase vinyl film coated with a repositionable, semi-permanent adhesive. The metalized block-out layer hides distracting backgrounds, while enhancing the brilliance of the white EZ Erase™ film.   Its glossy finish provides an exceptional surface for writing and drawing with several  popular dry erase markers. The solvents in most markers will eventually etch the surface, resulting in ghosting. That’s why I recommend the water-based Chalk Ink® Markers. They  write beautifully on RTape’s EZ Erase™ dry erase vinyl as well as on ChalkTalk™ chalkboard film. For more information read: Writing on EZ Erase with Chalk Ink

What are the most popular applications for EZ Erase™?

RTape’s new EZ Erase™ dry erase film is perfect for use in a both a commercial environment and in the home. Commercial applications include restaurant menu boards and whiteboards for conference rooms and classrooms.  In a home environment, you can use EZ Erase™ as a decorative wall appliqué in a home environment or for things-to-do lists on kitchen cabinets or refrigerators.

Will any dry erase marker work on EZ Erase?

While EZ Erase works with most of the dry erase markers on the market, it won’t work with every marker.  The original EXPO marker, for example, is not compatible with EZ Erase vinyl. RTape has successfully tested a wide range of popular dry erase markers. Our research department continues to test new markers, as they are introduced to the market. I use and recommend the “Wet Wipe” series of ChalkInk® Markers.

TEST, DON’T GUESS: How well a marker wipes off  RTape’s EZ Erase depends greatly on the ink type.  For this reason, we urge you to test the marker before use.

Is EZ Erase™ completely ghost free?

No dry erase film or dry erase board is completely ghost free. Over time any dry erase surface will begin to ghost. As the solvent of the ink system chemically etches the surface of a film, it gives the film some tooth for the dry erase ink to adhere to, resulting in a ghosted images. EZ Erase™ is no exception. The good news is that EZ Erase™ is easy to remove. Other films, with permanent adhesives, often require the use of heat and chemicals to remove the film and adhesive. For more information read:

How do I clean  EZ Erase™?

EZ Erase wipes clean with a soft tissue or with a soft cotton rag moistened with water. For stubborn ghosting, use isopropyl alcohol to clean the surface.  Do no use strong solvents such as paint thinner, turpentine, mineral spirits, lacquer thinner or wax and greaser remover. While these solvents will wipe away stubborn stains, you will create a worse problem in the future. Strong solvents will chemically etch the surface, giving the inks more surface area to bite into, making the next cleaning more difficult. For more information read:

How difficult is it to apply EZ Erase?

Application of EZ Erase™ isn’t difficult at all. To aid application of the film, EZ Erase™  features a forgiving adhesive system. RTape’s dry erase film also removes easily for several months after application on most surfaces. For more information read: Installation and Removal of EZ Erase

How difficult is it to remove EZ Erase™?

The ease or difficulty in removing any film depends on a variety of factors.  The type of adhesive used on the film is just one factor.  EZ Erase features an easy to remove adhesive.

That being said, even a removable adhesive is only removable for a limited time, typically about six months.  Over time all adhesives are permanent. The longer a film is on a surface, the more difficult it becomes to remove that film.

Other factors affecting removability are:

  • The type of paint used on the substrate
  • The texture of the surface
  • Condition of the substrate

EZ Erase™ should remove much more easily that other products in its class. Removal of the film, which had been applied to a wall painted with matte finish latex paint should be trouble-free. The film should come off in one piece with no adhesive residue.  Removal of the film, which had been applied to a smooth, flat glossy paint surface could be much more challenging.

Is EZ Erase™ safe for use in a home environment?

Because EZ Erase™ is occasionally used by children under the age of 12, we were required by law to have the product tested by a certified independent lab for compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Initiative Act (CPSIA). EZ Erase(TM)  satisfies all current governmental standards for lead content and phthalates.

Can I print on EZ Erase™ with my digital printer?

RTape’s new writable whiteboard is printable using ecosolvent, solvent and UV inkjet printers, as well as solvent and UV screen print inks. Other vinyl dry erase films have a polypropylene layer on top of the vinyl film which is not printable.
